The Art of Hanging Art: Avoid This Common Mistake That Ruins a Room | Debra Gail Fine Art
Sep 03, 2025
Have you ever walked into a room and felt like something was… off? The furniture is beautiful, the lighting is great, but something doesn’t quite pull it all together.
Nine times out of ten—it’s the art placement.
One of the most common (and easily fixable) design mistakes is hanging art too high or choosing pieces that are too small for the space. Whether you’re styling a hallway, a dining nook, or that stubborn blank wall above the sofa, a little guidance goes a long way in creating a cohesive, warm, and inviting space.

The 60-Inch Rule
Interior designers often point to a simple but powerful rule:
Hang your artwork so that the center of the piece is around 58–60 inches from the floor.
That’s roughly eye level for most people—and the sweet spot for balancing a room visually.
Even when you're stacking two pieces vertically, keep the center of that visual grouping near 60". It makes a world of difference!
Art that Fits the Wall—Not Just the Frame

Another common mistake is choosing art that’s too small. A tiny frame floating above a large sofa or headboard will feel disconnected and awkward. Instead, fill the space confidently:
-
Over a sofa? Your art should be at least two-thirds the width of the furniture.
-
In a hallway? Go big with bold vertical pieces for dramatic impact.
-
Gallery wall? Keep the spacing tight and center the overall layout, not just one piece.
Why Scale (and Soul) Matters
Art isn’t just decoration. It’s emotion, memory, and presence. A well-placed, properly-sized piece doesn’t just look better—it feels better. It anchors the space, tells a story, and gives the room a point of view.
When I create fine art prints and barnwood-framed pieces, I’m always thinking about this: Where will this live? What kind of energy will it bring?
That's why I offer multiple size options and provide free mockups upon request—so you can confidently choose what fits both your wall and your style.

Not Sure Where to Start?
Here are a few quick tips to elevate your space with art:
-
Measure first. Tape off dimensions on your wall before ordering.
-
Aim for impact. Don’t be afraid to go big—especially with open walls or tall ceilings.
-
Mix mediums. Canvas wraps, barnwood frames, float frames—each has its moment.
-
Ask for help. I’m always happy to help with sizing and placement ideas.
